Short video clip (1 min.) with commentary (but no music) on Munch's famous painting 'The Scream'.

KS3 idea: Get pupils to discuss the mood of the painting and how it might be translated into sound ideas. Get them to compose a one-minute music track/soundscape that could be added to the clip to enhance the mood but not mask the commentary.

Short video clip (1 min.) with commentary on one of Boticelli's best-known paintings. Rather sad-sounding music is used in soundtrack.

KS3/4 idea: The sad-sounding music has been chosen to reinforce the messages in the commentary. But just suppose the commentary was about youth and beauty. Can pupils compose or improvise an alternative soundtrack that would reinforce that different message? Turn down the existing soundtrack and play your new one along with the clip to judge it's success.

Short video clip (1 min.) showing a group of stone statues in a church. There is a central dead body sourrounded by distressed onlookers. There is no voice-over but the soundtrack texture is quite thick and terse.

KS3 idea: Discus with pupils the emotional effect of having such thick-textured terse-sounding music. Do they think a thinner more subdued musical texture would lend a different emotional feel to the clip? Ask them to compose a more subdued soundtrack and play it along with the clip (with the original soundtrack turnded down). How is the listener's reaction different?

Short video clip (1 min.) showing examples of modern abstract 3D art. The music soundtrack is equally abstract, focussing on sounds and textures more than melody and harmony in the accepted sense.

KS3 idea: Ask pupils to describe the existing soundtrack using music vocabulary as accurately as they can. Can they create a similar one-minute soundscape of their own? (Access to electronic sound sources will be helpful.)
